Air Transportation Options
San Francisco
San Francisco International Airport (SFO), located 110 miles (177 km) to the north, is the most common and largest international airport to reach the greater SF Bay Area, and it has connections to Monterey Airport or you can take a bus or rent a car from SFO to drive yourself to Monterey.
Oakland
Oakland International Airport (OAK), located 105 miles (169 km) to the north.
San Jose
Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport (SJC), located 75 miles (121 km) from downtown Monterey. However, there are no direct connecting flights to Monterey Regional Airport.
Monterey
Visitors can fly to Monterey Regional Airport (MRY) via international and domestic connecting routes on Alaska Airlines, Allegiant, American Airlines and United Express. Fly direct to MRY via airports including Los Angeles (LAX), San Francisco (SFO), Phoenix (PHX), San Diego (SAN), Las Vegas (LAS), Denver (DEN) and Dallas (DFW).
Local Transportation Options
Public transit/train
Route: Amtrak runs train service to Salinas. Then take the Monterey-Salinas Transit (MST) Line 20 bus from Salinas to Monterey.
Total time: This route takes approximately 4 hours and 30 minutes.
Cost: Estimated price is around $40-60.
Airport shuttle
Monterey Airbus: Provides shuttle service from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to Monterey.
Duration: Travel time is approximately 1.5 to 2.5 hours.
Cost: One-way prices range from about $48 to $69.
Drive yourself
Rental car: Many prefer to rent their own car from SFO, OAK, or SJC airport and drive to Monterey. The drive can be picturesque, but traffic inside the SF Bay Area can be heavy at commute times, so leave yourself plenty of time. Google Maps can plot your route.
Duration: Travel time is approximately 2 to 3 hours.
Cost: This option will cost more than the others as you'll typically keep your rental car for the entire duration and return it to the airport when you depart California. Costs vary significantly by agency.
